GTY_prince_jt_160422_12x5_1600With the recent passing of Prince, thought I would share a few thoughts about the artist.

First remember hearing of Prince with the release of 1999 and Little Red Corvette around 1982. It was summer when Little Red Corvette took off and it was playing all the time on the radio. There were no songs like it at the time.

Then Purple Rain came out in 1984 and When Doves Cry was huge. Playing all the time during the beginnings of MTV. Again, music like this just hadn’t existed before. It was so layered, sexy, rock n roll, funky.

The film, Purple Rain was also released in 1984 and became a cultural sensation. It was everywhere. He released Let’s Go Crazy and then Purple Rain. Each song another hit.

More hits over the years included Raspberry Beret, Kiss, U Got the Look, Diamonds & Pearls, Cream, and more.

The passing of Prince is a milestone for those of us at a certain age. We grew up listening to his music and it plays over the memories of our lives. Moments such as this are reminders that we all have a limited time on Earth, so we should do our very best to live fully and passionately.

His worked continued and will continue after his passing. It’s been suggested there is a vault at Paisley Park which contains an uncounted amount of additional material he worked on.

So the story goes that I attended a Prince concert with a friend in NYC. It had been raining in the city that night. And when Prince played Purple Rain all the umbrellas in Madison Square Garden opened up as we listened to the song. Those moments in life. How special, how fleeting.

Let’s Go Crazy

Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
To get through this thing called life

Electric word life
It means forever and that’s a mighty long time
But I’m here to tell you
There’s something else
The after world

A world of never ending happiness
You can always see the sun, day or night

So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
You know the one, Dr. Everything’ll Be Alright
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby

‘Cause in this life
Things are much harder than in the after world
In this life
You’re on your own

And if the elevator tries to bring you down
Go crazy, punch a higher floor4

If you don’t like the world you’re living in
Take a look around you
At least you got friends

You see I called my old lady
For a friendly word
She picked up the phone
Dropped it on the floor
(Ah, ah) is all I heard

Are we gonna let the elevator
Bring us down
Oh, no let’s go!

Let’s go crazy
Let’s get nuts
Let’s look for the purple banana
‘Til they put us in the truck, let’s go!

We’re all excited
But we don’t know why
Maybe it’s ’cause
We’re all gonna die

And when we do (When we do)
What’s it all for (What’s it all for)
You better live now
Before the grim reaper come knocking on your door

Tell me, are we gonna let the elevator bring us down
Oh, no let’s go!

Let’s go crazy
Let’s get nuts
Look for the purple banana
‘Til they put us in the truck, let’s go!

C’mon baby
Let’s get nuts

Let’s go crazy

Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down
Oh, no let’s go!
Go crazy

I said let’s go crazy (Go crazy)
Let’s go, let’s go
Let’s go

Dr. Everything’ll be alright
Will make everything go wrong
Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill
Hang tough children

He’s coming
He’s coming

Take me away!
