When the first trailer for Star Wars The Force Awakens premiered there was immediate reaction to the new droid seen in the first few seconds. Some reaction made fun of the new droid with people making spoofs of it and ridiculing it. But after the initial jokes died down others started to take notice of something quite special in design and execution.
Turns out BB-8 was built upon an idea from J.J. Abrams and a simple sketch. For over 1.5 years designers secretly worked on BB-8 in an effort to make the best new droid possible.
At the Star Wars convention held in Anaheim, CA BB-8 rolled out onto the stage and surprised most by being real and not CGI.
A new design model has been introduced to the world. It’s simplicity is deceiving and immediately accessible. While it is a character created for a film, it is also a technological marvel.
It also happens to be one of the hottest toys this holiday season.
What the character is capable of and how it fits into the story we find out today, when Star Wars The Force Awakens opens worldwide.
