Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach, California is an amazing place. It is the closest place I have found to Hawaii on the mainland. Malibu may offer similar vistas, but Laguna is more easily accessible. It’s a town with a mix of arts culture, beaches, restaurants, shops, galleries, and sunsets.

Being just down the road from Huntington and Newport, it offers landscape with rolling hills and incredible views. Huntington and Newport are much more flat. Somehow Laguna Beach has cliffs and ups and downs, and crashing waves.

It is also the location of Festival of the Arts Pageant of the Masters. Famous works of art are brought to life in front of an audience for a show quite unique. It’s rather extraordinary. Just like the town itself.

Wayne Thiebaud

Ever since I saw an exhibition in NYC with Wayne Thiebaud, I have been a fan of his work. It was fascinating to see his paintings of cakes, pies, cupcakes and the like. The way he used paint was like icing. Layered on thick and in turn making your mouth water and imagination soar. The colors are bright and light. And the still life focuses on the simple pleasures of life.

Wayne Thiebaud is 94 years old and still going strong. I’ve dreamed for a long time to own one of his works. Take a look at the whimsy and artistry.

Room is a breakout novel written by Emma Donoghue and published in 2010. It’s a story told through the perspective of a 5-year old boy whose held captive with his Mother. The premise is daunting. While I had heard about the novel years ago, was reluctant to invest.

But the film came out recently and we had a chance to see it. It remains intense and yet ultimately surprising and even somewhat transcendent. Through the eyes of the 5-year old, the story opens up new perspectives for all of us to consider about life and how we live it. Who would have thought a story about captivity could provide a window into shared experiences for all of us. Check it out. It’s likely Brie Larson will get an Oscar nomination for Best Actress this year. And watch out for Jacob Tremblay, he may get awards this season too.

Wow there is so much Harry Potter coming soon. Thrilled the stories are continuing. Always felt that the Harry Potter series was this generation’s Wizard of Oz. These are the three new offerings coming in 2016:
