Academy Awards – The Oscars

It was 1987 and the Best Picture nominees were: Broadcast News, Fatal Attraction, Hope and Glory, Moonstruck and The Last Emperor. Moonstruck had extraordinary writing and performances, Broadcast News was hysterical, insightful, and painful. Hope and Glory was a British film that was unique, funny, and earnest. Fatal Attraction was horrifying, intense, game-changing. The Last Emperor was grand and beautiful. It was also the year I embraced The Oscars.

The Last Emperor went on to win the award for Best Picture.

The Oscars acknowledge the best films and film work of the year, and provide a short list of films and performances that are inspiring. Do all the best films win? Not always. Do all the best films get nominated? Not always. But is there merit to most nominations, Yes. And it is that fact that keeps me coming back year after year.

This year the Best Picture nominees include: Beasts of the Southern Wild, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Amour, Django Unchained, Argo. Having seen all the nominated films, they all have merit, and they all have different experiences to offer. The Academy Awards – The Oscars are Sunday on ABC.

Love on Top Video – Beyoncé (Bonus Fascination)

Love on top

Hello. This is my first Bonus Fascination. This song came out in 2011, but I am fascinated with the video this week. Great choreography, the video concept is clean, and the song is fun. Enjoy.

Liquid Bandage

This is my weekly fascination. The liquid bandage has been around for a while, but I finally used it recently and realized what I have been missing. Got a paper cut between my thumb and pointer finger. Wearing a bandaid is nearly impossible, but with this stuff you can paint it on and not worry. And it helps in healing. Make sure you read the guidelines for use and be aware of the active ingredients. But the next time you have a bandaid fall off, try this stuff.

In the future everyone will be world famous for 15 minutes – Andy Warhol

Recently been contemplating the mark we leave on the world. Some people leave their legacy through their children, others create art. Andy Warhol was able to leave his mark in the art world, but also culturally. His 15 minutes quote has remained. Interesting to think that something you say could outlast you for decades and become a part of the social lexicon.

This quote was particularly prescient. The obvious place where this gained traction was with Reality TV. However, social media, blogs, social apps, and the internet in general have broaden the scope of this particular thought.

We now see people becoming famous for viral videos, or having a camera focus on them during a football game. It’s a new world. Welcome to it.

60 Minutes

60 Minutes started in 1968 and is still on the air. This incredible, ground-breaking news magazine show has brought the most important stories to light. In fact, in 2012 they exposed the congressional perk of trading stock with insider knowledge. The news story led to the STOCK act, which stands for Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act. It passed it April 2012. And according to wikipedia, the show has won 95 Emmy Awards and is the longest running prime time show. And it took me years to realize when the image of the stopwatch runs, it is accurate to the time in the show. Standard setting. Check it out Sundays on CBS.

There’s even an app.
